Kindergarten |
The Learning to Learn School is the kindergarten of Adda Clevenger Junior Preparatory and Theater School for Children which was established in 1980. It is designed for children of above average learning ability.
The school follows the European/Asian tradition of a longer school day and year and therefore is able to provide a double curriculum: accelerated academics and creative/performing arts. After a short evaluative session, kindergarten children begin first grade level work. A systematic phonics-based English Language Arts program is favored over the "whole language" curriculum. Performing and creative arts are part of the basic curriculum and all kindergarten children participate in creative writing, theater games, chorus, and dance. Kindergartners perform with the rest of the Lower and Upper School students in three major productions each school year. |
If the preschool play curriculum has served its purpose and your child is ready for more challenging "grown-up" activities such as reading, writing, arithmetic, science, and social studies as well as creative and performing arts, you are invited to come for a visit. The school facility is a beautiful historic twelve thousand sq. ft. building in San Francisco's Noe Valley, where San Francisco history began. Director: The school was founded in 1980 and is state certified. The school year runs from mid-August through July, in keeping with membership requirements of the National Association for Year-Round Education. Lower School classes are scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Vacations: Thanksgiving, Winter/Christmas, Semester Break, Spring/Easter and Summer. All legal holidays are observed. Uniforms are required. |

The curriculum is designed to cover subjects appropriate to the formal education of children and exceeds state requirements. No special agendas are served. All students of the school are members of the ADDA CLEVENGER YOUTH CHORUS OF SAN FRANCISCO under the direction of John Davey-Hatcher. A show choir is directed by Urs Leonhardt Steiner. Choristers receive a well-rounded vocal music, dance, and drama education and many opportunities to perform. There also is training with chimes and handbells under the direction of Brent Post. |
